Rising VPS Costs Force Forex Brokers to Rethink Algo Hosting
TL;DR: AI compute demand has driven generic VPS prices up to 144% since April, forcing forex brokers and algo traders to decide who actually pays for 24/7 bot uptime. Three models now compete: self-hosted VPS, broker-subsidized hosting tied to volume thresholds, and platform-native cloud execution like cTrader Cloud. Each option trades cost against control, and the wrong choice can kill execution edge.
The Memory Crunch Behind the Price Spikes
The numbers are not subtle. Hetzner raised its CPX22 cloud server in Germany and Finland from EUR 7.99 to EUR 19.49 per month on June 15 β a 143.9% increase. OVHcloud lifted its entry VPS-1 plan 44.5% and its VPS-6 tier nearly 49%. Leaseweb applied an average 20% increase to new VPS contracts from August 1, with its US entry plan jumping from $3.50 to $6.99. Existing contracts were largely spared at renewal, but any operator repricing infrastructure right now is absorbing real margin pressure.
The cause is structural, not cyclical. OVHcloud confirmed that memory manufacturers have redirected capacity toward GPUs and high-bandwidth AI compute. Micron told investors directly that AI demand is outpacing industry supply for memory and storage. At Equinix, AI workloads represented roughly 60% of its largest first-quarter deals. This is not a blip β it is a capacity allocation decision made by the semiconductor industry, and retail trading infrastructure sits at the back of the queue.
For brokers running forex client acquisition campaigns that convert on algo-friendly features, the infrastructure cost behind those features is quietly rising. A broker that promotes free VPS hosting as a retention tool is now paying more to deliver that promise.
Three Models, Three Risk Profiles
The bill for keeping an algorithm online around the clock lands in one of three places, and each model has a distinct risk profile for operators.
Self-hosted VPS. The trader or firm rents infrastructure directly from a provider like Hetzner, Leaseweb, or a managed trading VPS vendor. Full customization β Windows environments, DLL calls, external applications, multi-terminal setups β is available. Price increases hit immediately on new orders or at rescale. Beeks secured a five-year Proximity Cloud contract with an FX brokerage this year, and a separate broker awarded Beeks a roughly $2 million contract in 2025 for a dedicated proximity environment. At that scale, dedicated infrastructure still wins on latency and control.
Broker-subsidized VPS. Pepperstone’s published terms require at least $1 million in trading volume over 60 days before they cover VPS costs. FP Markets and IC Markets use monthly lot thresholds. The economics are straightforward: the broker recoups hosting costs through spread and commission revenue. When generic VPS prices rise 40β144%, that subsidy becomes more expensive to sustain, and volume thresholds may tighten. Brokers using managed performance advertising to acquire high-volume algo traders need to factor this into client LTV models β the cost to retain a subsidized VPS client is no longer fixed.
Platform-native cloud execution. cTrader’s Cloud Execution, funded by Spotware, lets traders run cBots from mobile, web, or desktop without managing a separate server. Up to 10 concurrent instances on a live account, automatic broker-matched server location, and continuous uptime when the device goes offline. No cost passed to the trader. The tradeoff is real: no Windows interfaces, no runtime-loaded DLLs, no external HTTP requests, and no region selection. If a strategy depends on any of those, platform cloud is not an option.
What Platform-Hosted Execution Actually Excludes
The limitations of platform-native hosting are not marketing fine print β they are architectural constraints that directly affect which strategies can run. cTrader Cloud operates in a Linux environment. It explicitly excludes Windows-specific interfaces, standalone DLLs loaded at runtime, and standard HTTP requests. Local files are wiped when an instance stops. TradeLocker Studio currently requires the trader’s machine to stay on and the application to remain open for continuous operation β effectively ruling it out for unattended 24-hour execution.
This matters operationally. Any strategy using custom data feeds via HTTP, Windows-dependent backtesting libraries, or multi-terminal arbitrage logic cannot run on platform cloud. The firm or trader using those strategies still needs a full VPS β and that VPS just got 20β144% more expensive depending on provider and contract timing.
Brokers promoting algo-friendly environments should be specific about which execution models they support. Vague “free VPS” offers that exclude the strategy types their clients actually run erode trust and increase churn. A full marketing audit of how hosting benefits are communicated in acquisition funnels can surface gaps before they become support escalations.
MetaTrader’s Hosted Terminal: Useful but Constrained
MetaTrader users have a middle path: the MQL5 virtual terminal, priced at $15 per month or the equivalent of $10 per month on an annual plan. The service migrates Expert Advisors and charts and keeps them running without a physical server. It does not provide server-level access and prohibits DLL calls β similar constraints to cTrader Cloud, different price model. For brokers whose active client base runs MT4 or MT5 EAs without DLL dependencies, the MQL5 terminal is a workable cost containment option.
Brokers that absorb MQL5 terminal costs for qualifying clients are paying a known fixed fee rather than variable VPS pricing. As generic VPS costs rise, the relative value of that flat-rate subsidy improves. The catch is that the most sophisticated algo traders β those running proprietary strategies with custom code dependencies β are exactly the clients most likely to need full VPS access anyway. Precise audience segmentation in acquisition campaigns can help brokers identify which trader profiles actually need which hosting tier, avoiding over-subsidizing infrastructure for casual users.
What This Means for Forex Operators
For forex brokers and prop firms running algo-active client bases, the infrastructure cost shift creates three immediate operational questions.
Recalculate VPS subsidy economics. If your volume threshold for free VPS was set when Hetzner cost EUR 7.99 per month, it is now priced against EUR 19.49. A threshold that made sense at 2024 margin levels may now run at a loss on lower-volume accounts. Review it before renewal cycles force the issue.
Audit your platform compatibility claims. If marketing materials promise “run your bot 24/7 from our platform,” verify which strategy types that actually covers. Clients who discover the limitation after onboarding leave. Proper high-stakes vertical marketing β where iGaming operators have learned this lesson through regulated platform constraints β treats technical limits as disclosure, not footnote.
Differentiate on infrastructure quality, not just price. Dedicated proximity environments like Beeks command multi-million-dollar contracts because latency and uptime reliability are measurable competitive advantages for active traders. Brokers who invest in genuine low-latency infrastructure have a real story to tell in acquisition. Those relying on generic VPS resell at “free” pricing will find that benefit eroding as underlying costs rise. Using AI-driven lead qualification to identify algo traders who care about execution quality β versus casual traders who won’t notice β lets you allocate infrastructure spend where it actually drives retention.
The broader context for crypto and high-frequency client acquisition is identical: any vertical where automation-dependent traders are a core segment now faces higher infrastructure costs as a structural part of their retention model. The operators who model that cost explicitly will make better decisions on threshold setting, platform selection, and acquisition targeting than those treating it as a fixed IT line item.
